New year’s resolution

It’s the start of a new year, it’s a time when many of us make new year’s resolutions, but do they help us, are we able to stick with them, or is it just hopeful thinking….

Many years I have made new year’s resolutions, some years with greater success sticking to them then others. Resolutions from eating healthier, working out more, loosing weight, or just simply trying to make it trough an other year. Now I am at a point that I don’t make new year’s resolutions anymore. I believe that every single day we can start over, or work on becoming a better or healthier person. Why wait till a certain date, and most times when we wait till January first, we tend to chew of more then we can swallow (ok is that how the saying goes?)

Common resolutions

I think the most common resolutions are in regards to health, maybe eating better, cutting out sugar, or working out more. I asked a few people what their resolutions were, I got some interesting answers….

From this sweet elderly gentleman with dementia, he wants to find a woman to spent the night with. Someone else told me to have less fear. That made me think, fear comes in many shapes and forms, I’m afraid of spiders for example, but I think most people are afraid of change, trying new things, and even let go of old things that no longer serve them.

An other good one was staying goal oriented. That is a broad resolution, but so important. We tend to get side tracked from our goals and sometimes even our values. No matter what you’re trying to accomplish in life, its important to keep your eye on the goal, but also to enjoy the journey.

Other more common resolutions are:

  • saving money
  • spending more time with family and friends
  • eat more veggies
  • focus more on self-care
  • make new friends
  • travel
  • get a new hobby

Where does it go wrong?

So how many times did you make a whole list of new year’s resolutions and you didn’t stick with them? I think the hardest ones might be; saving money, working out more, eating healthier, etc. What are the pit falls here? Do we set unrealistic goals for ourselves, or do we set to many goals. Are you a person who is better at big and drastic changes at once, or do you do better with smaller steps. If you fair well with big and drastic changes, then chances are that you’re very good at sticking to your new year’s resolutions. If you do better with smaller steps, then setting drastic goals is not going to work. If you’re like me and are not very good at adjusting to major changes, then maybe set smaller goals, smaller resolutions.

How to stick to it

Like I mentioned above, if you’re like me, smaller steps might be the way to go for you. In stead of changing you whole eating regime, maybe start by cutting out sugars, or gluten, or start eating more healthier fats, or stop going through the drive through. If you want to work out more, but weren’t really active the past year, maybe don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to go to the gym and pump iron 5 days a week, but start with a walk outside. Besides that being a good way to exercise, you also spent time in the out doors, which can be very healing for the soul. You get my drift right?

Don’t beat yourself up

And then most important, don’t beat yourself up if you make a little side step, if you fall off the wagon. Don’t throw in the towel thinking that you can’t do it. Don’t allow your mind to go to that negative place, but take a few breaths and reflect back on how far you have come so far. Celebrate little mile stones, don’t look ahead to far thinking how far you still have to go, but sometimes take a moment to look back to see how far you have come.

Feel free to share with me if you have any new year’s resolutions or that you believe that you “should” make changes in your life when ever it is needed.

Happy New Year ❤

  1. Happy New Year Friend. I like this post from you. Personally, I do not believe that we need to wait till the new year to make resolutions. We can make resolutions anytime that we want. Every minute is a fresh start, it does not even have to wait till tomorrow. We have all these goals and dreams, things that would enable us to have a good life. However ultimately it is God who paves the way for us. Even the things that seem out of reach and almost impossible. People would think, “oh, there is no way that I would find a wife that quick”, or “oh, I couldn’t possibly get such a good job”. However, with God nothing is impossible. It is always a great idea to involve God in all that we do. He has the power to make things work out well for us. Prayers to God and faith in him are useful ways to invite his presence.
